Apple has released Final Cut Camera 2.0, a major update that adds powerful new features to turn the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max into professional filmmaking tools. The update includes ProRes RAW recording, genlock synchronization, and enhanced front camera controls for the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

ProRes RAW and Open Gate Recording

The iPhone 17 Pro models are the first smartphones to record ProRes RAW, which captures unprocessed camera sensor data. This gives filmmakers more control during editing, like adjusting colors and exposure with better flexibility. The update also brings open gate recording, using the full camera sensor for a wider field of view and resolution above standard 4K. This allows more freedom to crop or stabilize shots without losing quality.

Genlock Synchronization

Genlock lets multiple iPhones sync their video recordings perfectly with each other and with professional camera gear, ensuring frame-accurate results for multi-camera productions. This feature saves a lot of editing time by avoiding manual frame alignment. Third-party developers can also use genlock via a new API; Blackmagic Design has already added support with its new Camera ProDock.

Front Camera Improvements

The update adds manual controls for the redesigned Center Stage front camera across the iPhone 17 family. This camera uses a larger, square sensor with a wider field of view and higher resolution. It can capture video in both landscape and portrait modes without needing to rotate the iPhone.

Additional Features

  • Support for Apple Log 2 color profile for richer colors in ProRes or HEVC video on iPhone 17 Pro.
  • Timecode options for precise clip identification during editing.
  • ProRes video recording with the new 200 mm telephoto camera at up to 4K60 fps on iPhone 17 Pro.

Availability

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available as a free download later this month on the App Store. It supports iPhone Xs or newer running iOS 18.6 or later, but some features like ProRes RAW and genlock require iOS 26 and an iPhone 17 Pro model.
