Google Photos has introduced exciting new creative tools to make it easier for users to bring still images to life and share them in innovative ways. Announced by Josh Sassoon, Director of UX for Google Photos and Google One, these new features include photo-to-video animation, photo remixing, and a new Create tab that centralizes all creative options.

Photo-to-Video Animation Powered by Veo 2 Technology

One of the standout additions is the Photo-to-Video feature, which uses Veo 2 technology to transform static photos into six-second animated videos. Users can apply either “Subtle movements” or the more randomized “I’m feeling lucky” animation prompts. This allows users to add dynamic effects to memorable pictures such as childhood portraits or group selfies, making them more engaging and shareable. Usage limits may apply to this feature.

Remix Tool for Artistic Photo Transformations

The new Remix tool enables quick artistic stylization of photos directly from the gallery. This feature lets users easily turn their images into illustrations or creatively enhanced versions without needing separate editing apps. It’s designed to provide users with an intuitive and fast way to experiment with different looks and share unique creations.

Create Tab: A Central Hub for Creativity

Create Tab

Google Photos now includes a dedicated Create tab that consolidates all creative functions—including Photo-to-Video, Remix, collages, and highlight videos—into a single accessible location within the app. This hub aims to encourage users to explore and experiment with Google’s creative tools, with updates planned based on user feedback.

Responsible AI and Transparency

Google emphasizes responsible AI use with these features. Every creation made with Photo-to-Video and Remix includes an invisible SynthID watermark to mark AI-generated content, while videos also bear a visible AI label. These measures align with Google’s commitment to transparency and safeguarding against misuse. The company also undertakes intensive “red teaming” (security testing) and invites user feedback to continually enhance safety.

Availability

  • Photo-to-Video: Available now in the U.S. on both Android and iOS.
  • Remix: Rolling out gradually on Android and iOS across the U.S. in the coming weeks.
  • Create Tab: Expected rollout starting in August within the U.S.

These new features build on Google Photos’ ongoing effort to blend cutting-edge AI technology with user-friendly design, making photo memories more dynamic and personal while maintaining trust and transparency. Users in the U.S. can start enjoying these creative tools immediately, with wider availability expected soon.
