Google Announces Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program with Free Replacement for Affected Devices

Google has announced a Battery Performance Program for the Pixel 6a, following reports of overheating and two incidents where devices caught fire earlier this year. The company is taking action to address a potential battery overheating risk that could pose safety hazards to users.

Mandatory Software Update

Starting July 8, 2025, all Pixel 6a devices will automatically receive the Android 16 update. However, the new battery management features will only activate on affected devices—referred to as “Impacted Devices”—after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. Users will receive a warning notification at 375 cycles to alert them that these changes are approaching.

The update is designed to limit battery capacity and charging speed on impacted units, reducing the risk of overheating and potential fire hazards. Google notes that these features may result in shorter battery life between charges and slower charging rates. After the update, devices may also temporarily display unusual battery levels as they recalibrate.

Free Battery Replacement and Support

Owners of eligible Pixel 6a devices can receive one complimentary battery replacement beginning July 21, 2025. Service will be available at select walk-in repair centers in:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • Singapore
  • Japan
  • India

Mail-in repair options are also offered in the US and India. Battery replacements require a physical inspection; devices with liquid damage or other significant issues may be disqualified.

In regions where battery replacement isn’t available, Google may provide cash compensation or Google Store discount codes as alternatives. These support options are only available to individual consumers and must be claimed before July 8, 2026.

Eligibility and Registration

Not all Pixel 6a devices are affected. Users can check eligibility and register for support through Google’s dedicated registration page. The program excludes enterprise customers and bulk purchasers, and does not extend the original warranty terms.

This proactive move follows similar battery safety efforts by Google for previous Pixel models, aiming to protect users and maintain device safety standards.
