After nearly a decade, Windows 10 has officially reached its end of life. As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft has stopped releasing new feature and security updates for the OS. However, Windows 10 users aren’t entirely out of luck — Microsoft is offering a way to continue receiving free security updates for one more year.

The company has launched the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, allowing users to keep their systems protected until October 2026. Enrollment is available directly through Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, where users will find an “Enroll now” button under the update banner.

There are three ways to join the program:

  • Link your Microsoft account and back up your PC using OneDrive
  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points
  • Pay $30 to enroll manually

The ESU program covers up to 10 devices per Microsoft account and ensures continued protection against emerging threats. Users in the European Economic Area can skip the OneDrive backup requirement but must sign in with their Microsoft account at least once every 60 days.

Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed continued support for Defender Antivirus definitions and security patches for Microsoft 365 apps like Word and Excel until 2028. Google Chrome will also keep supporting Windows 10 systems for the foreseeable future.

With the ESU program now live, Windows 10 users can safely stretch their device’s lifespan for another year while deciding whether to upgrade to Windows 11 or switch to an alternate OS.
