Samsung is gearing up to expand its innovative foldable smartphone lineup with its first-ever tri-fold device, tentatively named the Galaxy Z Trifold. Although absent from the recent July 2025 Galaxy Unpacked event — where Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and Z Flip7 FE — developments signal that the tri-fold phone is nearing launch.

Trademark Filing Suggests Name and Imminent Launch

According to a report by GalaxyClub, Samsung filed a trademark for the name “Galaxy Z Trifold” in South Korea on July 15, 2025. While this aligns with Samsung’s Galaxy Z foldable series branding, the company often registers multiple names, and the final name of the device could change before its commercial release. TM Roh, Head of Samsung Mobile, recently confirmed that Samsung plans to release the tri-fold phone before the end of 2025, although the device’s final name remains under consideration.

From Concept to Reality: The Journey of Samsung’s Tri-Fold

The tri-fold foldable phone has been in Samsung’s folded device pipeline for several years. Early design hints, including a G-shaped folding mechanism, were first revealed during CES 2022. In addition to the “Galaxy Z Trifold” moniker, Samsung has also reportedly considered other names such as “Galaxy G Fold” or “Galaxy Z Fold Ultra,” indicating a desire to position the device as an advanced extension of its Fold series.

Internally known by the codename Q7M and carrying the model number SM-F968N, the tri-fold device reflects a sophisticated piece of engineering. The triple-hinge design enables the phone to fold in three sections, providing enhanced versatility and a larger display area than traditional dual-fold models.

Launch Timeline and Market Positioning

Samsung has committed to launching the tri-fold device within 2025. Trusted leaker Ice Universe has disclosed a more precise timeframe, suggesting the launch could come as early as October 2025. The release may be limited, with initial production volumes small due to the phone’s complexity and anticipated high price point. Samsung seems to be positioning the tri-fold as a premium showcase model that will pave the way for future foldable innovations rather than mainstream mass adoption.

The move comes as competitors also advance in the tri-fold space. Chinese giant HUAWEI, which already debuted its first tri-fold smartphone, reportedly plans to release its second tri-fold device in September 2025, underscoring a growing race to perfect multi-fold foldable technology.

What to Expect Next

As Samsung finalizes development, more details about the Galaxy Z Trifold’s specifications, display technology, camera capabilities, and pricing are expected to surface. Industry watchers and foldable enthusiasts eagerly await what could be a monumental step forward in smartphone design, pushing the boundaries of mobile usability and innovation.

Stay tuned for more updates as Samsung approaches the official unveiling of its much-anticipated tri-fold foldable smartphone later this year.
