Snapchat has introduced a new feature called Topic Chats that lets users join public conversations on any popular or trending subject. This feature clusters Snaps and Spotlight videos related to the topic, offering a visual way to explore what’s being discussed. It’s reminiscent of platforms like Clubhouse and X Communities that facilitate public engagement through topic-centered chats.
Users can join a discussion by tapping a prominent yellow “Join the conversation” button visible on Stories and Spotlight videos related to the topic. Additionally, users already in a group can jump into the discussion right from their Snapchat Chat page. A key privacy feature is that the feature allows users to connect with Snapchat friends within the chat while keeping their profiles hidden from others outside their friend list.
Moderated by a large language model in accordance with Snapchat’s community guidelines, Topic Chats aim to keep conversations safe and engaging. The rollout begins with Snapchatters in Canada, New Zealand, and the US, targeting the app’s young and socially active audience.
This move aligns with Snapchat’s ongoing efforts to boost engagement and introduce new revenue streams, including the recent Lens+ subscription and paid storage for Memories. With Topic Chats, Snapchat aims to foster richer community interaction in a familiar visual and social environment, hoping to harness the popularity of public audio and group discussion platforms in its own unique way.
What do you think about Snapchat’s Topic Chats? The company invites users to join discussions and share their thoughts as this feature rolls out.
