Meta’s social media platform Threads has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 400 million monthly active users (MAUs) just two years after its launch. This announcement was made by Instagram President Adam Mosseri, highlighting Threads’ rapid adoption and steady growth since its debut as a competitor to Twitter (now rebranded as X).

Impressive User Growth

According to Mosseri, Threads added 50 million new monthly users in the last quarter alone, increasing from 350 million users reported by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in late April 2025. This surge reflects the platform’s escalating popularity and growing engagement among social media users worldwide.

Mobile Engagement Closing in on X

Market intelligence from Similarweb shows that Threads’ mobile apps on iOS and Android recorded 115.1 million daily active users in June 2025, representing a remarkable 127.8% year-over-year increase. In comparison, X’s mobile daily active users declined by 15.2% to 132 million during the same period. This indicates that Threads is rapidly closing the gap in mobile engagement with X, which still maintains a lead overall in total user base with more than 600 million MAUs based on prior statements.

Despite the mobile surge, X continues to dominate in desktop web usage, reporting an average of 145.8 million daily web visits globally in June 2025, while Threads’ web visits remained much lower at 6.9 million daily. This highlights Threads’ current strength in mobile but also a growth opportunity on the web platform.

Platform Evolution and Future Prospects

Threads has steadily enhanced its feature set over the past year to improve user experience and engagement. These updates include the introduction of direct messaging independent from Instagram, integration with fediverse networks, customized feeds, AI-powered tools, and other user-requested features. This focused development has played a key role in attracting and retaining users.

Adam Mosseri acknowledged the platform’s journey from its early days as “a zany idea to compete with Twitter” to becoming “a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives.” He also emphasized that there is still “so much work to do” and promised more improvements and features in the pipeline.

Significance in the Social Media Landscape

Threads’ rapid growth is an important development in the competition between Meta and X. While X remains the leader in overall user numbers and web traffic, Threads is narrowing the gap, particularly in mobile engagement, signaling intensified rivalry for dominance in the social media space. As mobile usage continues to drive social networking globally, Threads’ momentum positions it as a formidable contender in this evolving ecosystem.

With continued feature rollouts and growing adoption, Threads is poised to further challenge X’s position and expand its influence in connecting people through open conversations.
