OpenAI is reportedly developing an advanced AI music generator that lets users create original tracks and accompaniments simply by entering text prompts. This project—now in collaboration with students at New York’s renowned Juilliard School—focuses on annotating and training the model to understand musical structure and generate creative music outputs.

Although there’s no official launch date yet, sources suggest OpenAI might roll out this music tool as a standalone service, part of ChatGPT, or even integrated with Sora, OpenAI’s AI video generator. The new tool could compose a guitar track for vocals or generate background music for videos, drawing direct parallels to the popular Suno AI music platform.

Industry discussions highlight both excitement and concern. While AI-generated music could disrupt licensing models and music creation, platforms like Spotify are already battling a flood of low-quality AI music and reinforcing stricter content policies. OpenAI’s move may also spark fresh debates regarding copyright, creative integrity, and artist compensation within the digital music industry.
