Google has cracked Apple’s AirDrop protocol and integrated it with its Quick Share feature, allowing seamless file transfers between Pixel 10 phones and Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Remarkably, Google achieved this interoperability without any collaboration from Apple.

Pixel 10 users can now send and receive files with Apple devices via AirDrop by enabling a temporary “Everyone” discoverability mode on the receiving device for 10 minutes. From there, the Pixel’s Quick Share interface detects Apple devices, and transfers look and behave like native AirDrop requests on the receiving end.

This cross-platform file sharing relies on a direct, peer-to-peer connection that does not route data through servers or log shared content, ensuring user privacy and security. Google subjected this feature to rigorous internal and third-party security assessments, confirming it is secure and robust.

Currently limited to the Pixel 10 series, Google plans to expand this functionality to more Android devices over time. This breakthrough marks a major step toward breaking down the long-standing barriers between iOS and Android ecosystems, complementing advancements like RCS adoption on iPhones.

Google expressed openness to collaborating with Apple in the future to enable stricter permissions modes like “Contacts Only,” enhancing security while maintaining interoperability. However, Apple has yet to comment on this development.
