Huawei is gearing up to launch the Mate XT 2, its second-generation tri-fold smartphone, possibly in September 2025. Following the original Mate XT—which was the world’s first tri-fold smartphone—Huawei is now preparing an upgraded model expected to offer a range of improvements in hardware, design, and performance.

One notable update revealed by recent reports is the wide color selection for the Mate XT 2. At launch, the device will reportedly be available in four distinct colors: Mystic Black, Bright White, Auspicious Red, and Crimson Purple. This marks an expansion compared to the first Mate XT, which launched with only two color options, Red and Black. This wider palette aligns with Huawei’s goal to cater to a variety of consumer tastes and preferences.

On the hardware front, the Mate XT 2 is expected to feature significant upgrades. The device may be powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9020 SoC, built using the advanced “N-1 mode” manufacturing process, which should offer improved performance and energy efficiency over the Kirin 9010 used in the first Mate XT. Additional anticipated enhancements include camera improvements and other refinements to make the device more competitive in the high-end foldable smartphone segment.

The original Huawei Mate XT was priced around $2,800 at launch but faced shortages that later drove prices close to $10,000. Despite this, the device reportedly sold well, a positive sign for Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone strategy. Early indications suggest the Mate XT 2 could follow suit with strong sales, helped by its upgrades and possibly better market readiness.

Huawei is likely to launch the Mate XT 2 first in China, with a global release expected afterward. This strategy may help gauge market response before expanding availability. Meanwhile, its main competitor, Samsung, is still reportedly working on its first tri-fold model, the Galaxy G Fold, which missed the expected July Unpacked launch.

Huawei Mate XT 2 looks poised to advance the tri-fold smartphone category with a refined design, four appealing color options, a powerful Kirin 9020 chipset, and upgraded features. All eyes will be on Huawei’s September launch event to see if this bold device can maintain the momentum established by the original Mate XT.
