Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6), codenamed “Orion,” is rumored to launch with a price lower than the $700 PS5 Pro, aiming for broader market appeal while delivering next-gen performance. According to leaks from the trusted YouTube channel “Moore’s Law Is Dead,” the PS6 will feature:
- 8x Zen 6 CPU cores (or newer)
- A powerful AMD RDNA 5 GPU with 40-48+ compute units running above 3GHz
- GDDR7 memory on a 160-bit or 192-bit bus at 32GT/s
- Around 160W total board power (TBP), known for low power consumption
- Three times greater rasterization performance than the PS5, alongside improved ray tracing
- Chiplet design possibly using “Navi 5” desktop chiplets
- Backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games
The console targets 4K resolution at 120 FPS gaming with enhanced ray tracing capabilities. Sony is balancing high performance and energy efficiency with a more affordable price, reflecting a strategy reminiscent of the PS4 launch to appeal to a mass market rather than just the high-end segment.
Additionally, Sony plans to launch a handheld companion device named “Canis,” rumored to outperform the Ryzen-based ROG Ally X handheld. It will have:
- 4x Zen 6c cores
- 12-20 RDNA 5 compute units at 1.6-2GHz
- 15W TBP and 128-bit bus with LPDDR5X memory
- Features like microSD and M.2 SSD slots, touchscreen, haptic feedback, and dual microphones
- Backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5
The PS6 and “Canis” handheld are speculated to release around mid-fall 2027 or early 2028.
This next-generation console aims to combine powerful hardware capable of 4K 120 FPS gaming and ray tracing with affordability and energy efficiency, differentiating itself from the pricier and more power-hungry PS5 Pro.
