Reddit is making moves to develop its own in-house search engine, aiming to leverage its vast user base and community-driven content to provide highly accurate and relevant answers. CEO Steve Huffman shared with investors that the company is dedicating resources to turn Reddit into a “go-to search engine,” reflecting its growing role as a source of real-world advice and insights.
With over 416 million weekly active users and more than 70 million unique weekly active users on its core search, Reddit experiences a 10x growth in query volume since early 2025. The platform’s strength lies in its human-generated content, with users often preferring answers crafted by other users over AI, according to surveys cited by Huffman.
Reddit has already partnered with companies like Google and OpenAI, allowing its rich content to surface prominently in search results. However, this new search engine initiative represents a shift toward greater self-reliance, aiming to better serve users searching within Reddit while potentially offsetting any future dependency on external search engines.
The planned search engine will likely incorporate Reddit Answers, an AI-powered conversational interface launched in late 2024, which helps users find more precise information. This technology aims to improve search experience by tapping into the unique human perspective that Reddit’s user base provides.
As Reddit continues to grow and evolve, its ambition to become a major player in search reflects broader trends in digital information discovery—where community-verified, authentic content is increasingly valued.
