WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new feature called “guest chats” that could change the way users communicate by enabling chat conversations without requiring the other person to have the app or even an account. Currently in testing on WhatsApp’s beta Android build, guest chats allow users to start a text-only, private one-on-one conversation through a link that can be shared via text, email, or social media. When the recipient taps the invite link, they can chat directly with the sender without installing WhatsApp or signing up for an account.
This new feature is distinct from WhatsApp’s ongoing work in enabling interoperability with third-party chat apps. Unlike integrations involving external developers, guest chats are built natively by WhatsApp, promising a smoother and more consistent user experience. Importantly, guest chat messages are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring privacy for both parties.

While guest chats will be limited in functionality — they do not support media sharing like photos, videos, GIFs, voice notes, video calls, or group chats — they provide a simple, secure way to communicate without barriers. This is particularly useful for situations like traveling abroad, where someone may need to quickly contact a local without having to download an app or incur roaming charges.
The feature is still under development and is not yet available to all users, but it promises to enhance WhatsApp’s convenience and accessibility by allowing nearly anyone to securely message without the typical signup hurdles. Once launched, guest chats could help WhatsApp remain a top messaging choice by expanding who and how people can connect, making basic but private messaging universally accessible.
