WhatsApp has introduced a new translation feature to help users communicate more easily across different languages. Now, users can simply long-press a message and tap ‘Translate’ to see it in their chosen language. This feature is available for one-on-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates.
Users can select which language to translate from and to, and once a language pack is downloaded, it can be used again without needing to download it each time. On Android devices, there’s also an option to turn on automatic translation for entire chat threads. This means all future messages in that conversation will be automatically translated.
Importantly, WhatsApp emphasizes that all translations are done directly on the user’s device. This means messages remain private and encrypted, as WhatsApp cannot access the content of the messages during translation.
The feature is currently available on Android in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. On iPhones, it supports over 19 languages, including Arabic, Dutch, English (UK and US), French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Spain), Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
This new translation feature started rolling out on September 23, 2025, and will gradually be available to users worldwide in more languages in the coming months. It builds on WhatsApp’s earlier updates such as Writing Help and AI-powered Message Summaries to further improve how people connect and communicate globally.
With this update, WhatsApp aims to remove language barriers, making chatting smoother and more inclusive for its billions of users around the world.
