Apple is expected to soon enable better compatibility between iPhones and third-party smartwatches with the upcoming iOS 26.1 beta update. This update includes a new feature called Notification Forwarding, which may allow iPhones to send app notifications to smartwatches not made by Apple. Currently, only Apple Watches receive this seamless notification support.
The Notification Forwarding feature will let users choose which apps can send notifications to a connected accessory, but notifications can only be forwarded to one device at a time. If enabled for a third-party device, notifications to an Apple Watch will be disabled during that time.
In addition, the beta includes references to a new pairing framework called AccessoryExtension to simplify connecting and managing third-party devices with the iPhone.
This change is likely influenced by regulatory pressure, particularly from the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to allow third-party accessories to offer features similar to Apple’s own devices.
If implemented, this would open up options for iPhone users who prefer third-party smartwatches such as those from Garmin, Fitbit, or Samsung, allowing them improved notification and app interaction experience.
However, it remains uncertain when this feature will officially launch and if it will be available worldwide or limited to regions like the EU initially. The iOS 26.1 update is anticipated in October 2025, but the rollout of this feature might come later.
This potential development represents a notable shift in Apple’s approach to third-party accessories, promising more choices and better integration for iPhone smartwatch users.
