Google continues its beloved tradition of dessert-themed internal codenames for Android versions with the upcoming Android 17, officially tagged as API level 37.0. While the public facing name will simply remain “Android 17,” the internal codename chosen by Google is “Cinnamon Bun,” a sweet pastry known for its rolled dough, cinnamon-sugar filling, and icing glaze, popular in both Europe and North America.

This choice marks a return to the alphabetical dessert codenames after a recent shift in development models. With Android 15 codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream” and Android 16 as “Baklava,” the next name starting with “C” was expected. Since “Cupcake” (used for Android 1.5) was off the table, Google picked a creative and appetizing alternative that fits the pattern and the newly adopted “Trunk Stable” development model, which speeds up Android releases and streamlines feature integration.

Although “Cinnamon Bun” will not appear in most public marketing materials, it is already visible in early beta builds and internal documentation. This naming acts as a fun Easter egg for developers and enthusiasts who follow Android’s evolution closely.

Google is expected to officially launch Android 17 around June 2026, continuing a trend toward earlier release timelines that facilitate quicker adoption on new devices.
