Google activates Emergency Location Service in India, starting with Uttar Pradesh for faster emergency responses.
Feature Overview
Google’s Emergency Location Service (ELS) now operates in India, debuting in Uttar Pradesh through integration with the state’s 112 emergency line. The technology fuses GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular data to deliver precise location info—within 50 meters—to police, fire, and medical responders during calls or texts. It activates only on dialing emergency numbers like 112, transmitting data directly without Google storing it.
Uttar Pradesh Rollout
Uttar Pradesh Police partnered with Pert Telecom Solutions Pvt Ltd to embed ELS into their UP112 system after months of pilot testing handling over 20 million calls and SMS. Even dropped calls provide usable location data, enabling quick resource dispatch. This marks India’s first full ELS implementation, building on global availability in 60+ countries.
Technical Specs and Compatibility
ELS works on Android 6.0+ devices via the Fused Location Provider, sharing coordinates plus device language for better communication. No app install or setup needed—it’s free and privacy-focused with event-based activation only.
Broader Safety Integration
ELS complements Android tools like Car Crash Detection, Fall Detection, and the new Emergency Live Video rolling out elsewhere. Google aims to expand ELS across more Indian states as infrastructure partners adopt it. This boosts response times in distress scenarios with poor connectivity or unclear caller details.
