Google’s upcoming Pixel Watch 4 series debuts a significant redesign of its charging system that will mark a departure from previous Pixel Watch models. The new Pixel Watch 4 moves the charging contacts from the back of the watch to the left side, featuring two charging pins housed in an indentation on the side without the crown. This redesign means that older Pixel Watch chargers will no longer be compatible with the new model.
The side-mounted charging offers several practical benefits: it allows the watch to rest on its side while charging, making it easier for users to glance at the battery status without picking it up. This orientation is friendlier for placement on tables or nightstands. Additionally, Google claims this new charging mechanism results in about 25% faster charging compared to previous Pixel Watch generations.
Another advantage of relocating the charging pins is improved repairability. Unlike earlier Pixel Watches that were virtually unserviceable due to sealed designs, the Pixel Watch 4 will allow technicians to remove the back cover to perform repairs more easily. This side placement of charging contacts likely facilitates easier internal access to watch components.

The Pixel Watch 4 charging dock will be included in the purchase box but will not come with a dedicated USB-C power adapter, following the trend set by earlier Pixel Watch releases. Users can use any standard 5W USB-C adapter to power the charger. Google is also expected to sell the new charging dock separately through the Google Store, with pricing anticipated to be similar to the Pixel Watch 3 charger, which currently retails around $29.99.
This charging system overhaul, along with other recent improvements spotted in leaks and reports, indicates Google’s efforts to refine user convenience and device longevity with the Pixel Watch 4. The faster charging time and side-mounted design offer practical everyday benefits for Pixel Watch users, while repair-friendly hardware marks a welcome shift in device serviceability.
This update builds on the previously revealed Pixel Watch 4 specifications, available in 41mm and 45mm sizes, aiming to address some of the pain points from earlier models. With the launch date approaching, more details about the Pixel Watch 4 and its accessories are expected soon.
