Instagram Introduces Sharing of Public Stories Without Tagging

Instagram has introduced a new feature that lets users reshare any public Story to their own profiles, even if they weren’t tagged by the original creator. Until now, the option to “Add to Your Story” was limited only to Stories where the user was explicitly mentioned using an @ tag. Without tagging, people had to rely on screenshots or screen recordings to share, which reduced quality and didn’t credit the original poster properly.

This update makes resharing public Stories as easy as hitting a “Share” or “Retweet” button, similar to how content spreads on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.

Here’s how it works: When viewing a public Story, users will now see an “Add to Story” option, allowing direct sharing to their own Story. The reshared Story will clearly show the username of the original poster so viewers can easily visit their profile. Stories from private accounts remain protected and cannot be reshared this way.

To ensure creators still control their content’s visibility, Instagram has added a privacy setting called “Allow Sharing to Story.” Public profile owners can turn this off anytime to prevent others from resharing their Stories, giving them full control over who can spread their content.

This feature is rolling out globally on both iOS and Android devices, making it simpler than ever to share and discover Stories across the Instagram community.
