Apple has reportedly begun mass production of the iPhone 17 series, gearing up for the official launch scheduled in early September 2025. For the first time in history, all four iPhone 17 models — including the new iPhone 17 Air — will be assembled not only in China but also in India, marking a significant milestone in Apple’s manufacturing strategy.

Foxconn Ramps Up Production in China

According to insights from China Securities Journal (via Patently Apple), Apple’s main contract manufacturer Foxconn has started assembly at its Zhengzhou plant, often referred to as “iPhone City.” To boost worker recruitment and meet tight deadlines, Foxconn is reportedly offering generous bonuses ranging from 5,400 yuan ($752) to as much as 9,300 yuan ($1,294) depending on the employee’s role.

The strategy suggests Apple is bracing for high initial demand for the iPhone 17 lineup, although specific shipment numbers remain undisclosed.

India Joins as a Major iPhone Manufacturing Hub

In a first, India will assemble all four iPhone 17 models, including the iPhone 17 Pro series and the much-anticipated iPhone 17 Air. These Indian-assembled devices are reportedly bound for the US market, highlighting Apple’s effort to reduce dependence on China amid ongoing trade and tariff concerns.

Assembly is taking place at facilities run by Foxconn in Bangalore and Tata Group in Tamil Nadu. Tata’s factories are expected to significantly scale up production — with estimates suggesting they could handle up to half of India’s iPhone output within two years.

India’s Growing Role in Apple’s Supply Chain

The shift highlights Apple’s accelerating investment in India as a manufacturing base. Between April and July 2025, India’s iPhone exports reportedly reached $7.5 billion, underscoring its rising importance in Apple’s global operations.

Looking forward, sources suggest Apple is not only planning to assemble the iPhone 17e in India but is already in discussions about producing the iPhone 18 in the country.

iPhone 17 Lineup: What to Expect

Apple is expected to launch four models, continuing its now-standard approach:

  • iPhone 17 (standard model)
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17 Air — replacing the previous “Plus” model with an ultra-slim design

The lineup will officially debut in early September at Apple’s annual keynote, setting the stage for another major iPhone upgrade cycle.

With mass production underway in both China and India, Apple is clearly preparing for a strong iPhone 17 launch. The expanded manufacturing footprint not only secures supply for its biggest markets but also signals Apple’s broader strategy to diversify and decentralize its production base.

The iPhone 17 series is shaping up to be one of Apple’s most strategically important launches yet — both from a technological and a manufacturing perspective.
