MediaTek Unveils New Chipsets for Premium Chromebooks and Smart TVs

MediaTek announced two cutting-edge chipsets: the Kompanio 838 for premium Chromebooks and the Pentonic 800 for 4K smart TVs and displays. These chipsets boast significant advancements in processing power, AI capabilities, and connectivity, promising enhanced user experiences for both Chromebook and smart TV users.

Kompanio 838: Powering Up Chromebooks

The Kompanio 838 is an octa-core chipset built on a highly efficient 6nm process. It features a combination of 2x Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.6 GHz and 6x Arm Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz, delivering a balance of performance and battery efficiency. The inclusion of a dedicated AI processor, the MediaTek NPU 650, signifies MediaTek’s commitment to bringing AI features to Chromebooks.

This chipset also boasts the MediaTek Imagiq 7 series ISP, which allows for HDR imaging, dual camera support, and improved low-light capture. Additionally, hardware-accelerated AV1 video decoding ensures smooth 4K content streaming, even on multiple displays. The Kompanio 838 supports up to two 4K displays simultaneously, making it ideal for users who demand a larger workspace.

For seamless connectivity, the Kompanio 838 integrates MediaTek Filogic Wi-Fi 6 and 6E technology. This provides dual-band and tri-band connectivity options with speeds up to 1.9 Gbps, enhanced by a 2×2 antenna configuration and WPA3 security support.

Pentonic 800: Transforming the Smart TV Experience

The Pentonic 800 caters to the growing demand for premium 4K displays. It packs an Arm Cortex-A73 quad-core CPU clocked at up to 1.8 GHz and an Arm Mali-G57 MC1 GPU, delivering the processing power needed for a variety of applications on smart TVs, smart monitors, and even commercial displays.

The Pentonic 800 boasts extensive support for HDR formats, including Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail, HDR10/HLG, AHDR by Technicolor, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, HDR10+ Gaming, and HDR Vivid. Audiophiles will appreciate the support for Dolby DAP with Atmos, Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, and DTS: Virtual X.

MediaTek’s focus on AI is evident in the Pentonic 800. This chipset features a next-generation AI processor that offers a 50% improvement in performance and reduces bandwidth usage by up to 60% compared to its predecessor. This powerful NPU unlocks a suite of AI-powered display technologies, including AI-Super Resolution 3.0, AI-Contrast 2.0, AI-Picture Quality Scene Recognition 2.0+, and AI-Picture Quality Object Recognition 2.5+.

For immersive visuals, the Pentonic 800 supports variable refresh rates (VRR) up to a smooth 4K 165Hz. Compatibility with popular video codecs like HEVC, AV1, AVS3 High Profile, and VVC ensures high-quality 4K playback. Additionally, it supports MEMC, TCON, high-resolution audio, and a variety of display interface options.

OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) have the flexibility to integrate MediaTek’s Filogic Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or even Wi-Fi 7 solutions for reliable high-speed connectivity with low latency.
