OpenAI has extended its premium ChatGPT Projects feature to all users, including those on the free tier. Previously exclusive to paid subscribers, Projects allow users to create custom folders inside ChatGPT to organize chats, upload files and images, and set personalized instructions for each project.
Projects work like smart workspaces where users can create specific contexts or chatbots for particular use cases such as health, study, travel, or finance. For instance, users can upload medical reports to a health project or class notes to a study project, allowing ChatGPT to respond with context-aware answers powered by the latest GPT-5 model.
Projects in ChatGPT are now available to Free users.

Free users can currently upload up to five files per project, while ChatGPT Plus, Go, and Edu subscribers can upload up to 25 files, and Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers can upload up to 40 files. Notably, Projects now have separate memory from regular ChatGPT conversations, preventing overlap and improving context management.
Users can also customize projects with colors and icons for easier identification. However, some advanced features like scheduled task creation remain available only to paying subscribers.
The Projects feature is live on both the web and ChatGPT Android app, with the iOS rollout expected in the coming days. This update significantly enhances the organization and efficiency of ChatGPT for free users, making it easier to manage multiple workflows within one platform.
