Qualcomm Technologies, has announced the inauguration of its new Design Centre in Chennai, India, and the launch of the Qualcomm 6G University Research India Program. The Chennai Design Centre, representing an investment of Rs. 177.27 crores, will focus on innovations in wireless connectivity solutions, including Wi-Fi technologies and 5G cellular technology R&D. The center is expected to create employment opportunities for up to 1600 skilled professionals, aligning with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The Qualcomm 6G University Research India Program is an extension of the existing university research initiative, providing support to selected professors from prestigious institutions like IITs and IISc for their research endeavors in crucial 6G technology areas. The inaugural cohort comprises 17 scholars who will collectively receive approximately USD $1.02 million in funding over three years. The program unfolds in two phases, with the first phase involving soliciting research proposals from the chosen universities and the second phase facilitating ongoing interaction among professors, students, and designated Qualcomm contacts.

Research topics under the program range from the integration of AI/ML in 6G exploration to 6G Communications and Applications. The selected proposals are categorized into different areas such as Physical Layer (PHY), Physical/Medium Access Control Layer (PHY/MAC), Medium Access Control Layer (MAC), Upper Layers, and Radio Frequency (RF).
Apart from the 6G research program, Qualcomm has ongoing initiatives to support the wireless ecosystem in India, including university grants, awards, fellowships, and support for startups through programs like the Qualcomm Design in India Challenge and also the Qualcomm Semiconductor Mentorship program.
