Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have teamed up to launch a pilot program that brings AI-powered UPI payments directly into ChatGPT. The feature, part of a new “Agentic Payments” initiative, allows users in India to complete their entire shopping journey — from product discovery to checkout — through simple conversations with ChatGPT.

Powered by Razorpay’s secure payment infrastructureNPCI’s UPI network, and OpenAI’s conversational intelligence, the pilot enables seamless transactions without leaving the chat interface. Banking partners Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are supporting the rollout using UPI innovations like UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay.

E-commerce platform BigBasket is among the first to integrate, letting users ask ChatGPT to find and order groceries, compare prices, and pay through UPI — all confirmed within the chat. Users can also track or cancel orders in real time, maintaining complete control over every step.

The collaboration is part of a broader effort to explore AI-driven commerce experiences, including personalized product recommendations and automated checkouts. Long-term plans include expanding agentic AI payment use cases across other industries while ensuring strong data security and user consent measures.
