Samsung is rumored to be developing its first tri-foldable smartphone, potentially named the Galaxy G Fold, and recent reports suggest a launch as early as Q3 2025. This news follows a brief teaser shown at last month’s Galaxy Unpacked event, where a tri-folding device was glimpsed alongside other upcoming products.
The name “Galaxy G Fold” hints at the device’s unique folding mechanism. Unlike Huawei’s Mate XT with its outward S-fold, Samsung is reportedly pursuing a G-shaped design, folding inwards from both sides. This innovative approach promises enhanced durability, protecting the display from scratches and impacts when closed.
A Larger Screen and Compact Size
Leaked specifications paint a picture of a truly innovative device. The Galaxy G Fold is rumored to boast a 9.96-inch screen when fully unfolded, a significant 30% larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Despite this larger display, the folded height is expected to be around 6.54 inches, similar to a standard smartphone, making it pocketable and convenient. While the weight and thickness are likely to be comparable to devices like the Huawei Mate XT, the new folding design might add slightly to the overall thickness. The G Fold will also reportedly utilize newly developed display technology and protective films, distinct from those used in the current Z series.
Launch Timeline and Production Estimates
While initial predictions pointed to a 2026 release, recent information suggests a possible launch in Q3 2025. Display analyst Ross Young has supported this timeline, and industry insider Jukanlosreve indicates that tri-fold component production is slated to begin in Q2 2025. However, the launch is expected to be limited, with an estimated production of only 200,000 units, suggesting a niche product aimed at early adopters and tech enthusiasts.
A Foldable Future for Samsung
The Galaxy G Fold isn’t the only foldable device Samsung is expected to release. Rumors also circulate about the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and a more affordable Z Flip 7 FE. The tri-foldable device could potentially launch alongside these new foldables, although the exact timing remains uncertain. Whether it arrives in 2025 or 2026, the Galaxy G Fold represents an exciting step forward in foldable smartphone technology, showcasing Samsung’s commitment to innovation in this evolving market.
