Spotify has announced the launch of its new ‘Messages’ feature, enabling users to conveniently share their favorite music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more with friends and family directly within the app. This feature is designed to foster deeper connections and conversations around shared listening experiences.
Easy Sharing and Messaging
Users can start conversations within the app with people they have interacted with on Spotify before. Much like Instagram’s messaging system, message requests must be accepted or declined by recipients, giving users control over their interactions.
The Now Playing view features a quick share button, allowing users to instantly select a friend and send content. Spotify also suggests messaging contacts based on past interactions such as collaborative playlists, Jams, Blends, or shared Family and Duo plans.

Emoji Reactions and Privacy Protections
The messaging system includes emoji reactions for quick and fun responses. Spotify highlights that messages are protected using industry-standard encryption during transmission and storage.
To combat abuse, the company will use proactive detection technology to scan for unlawful or harmful content. Users can also block or report inappropriate messages easily through the app.
Availability
The Messages feature is rolling out starting this week on mobile devices to Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets. Spotify has not yet disclosed the list of supported countries but plans to expand availability over time.
A Step Toward a More Social Spotify
This marks Spotify’s return to in-app messaging after discontinuing a similar feature in 2017. The company believes that enabling friends and family to share and discuss music inside the app will deepen user engagement and aid music discovery through word of mouth.
With 276 million paying subscribers as of Q2 2025 and ambitious growth plans, Spotify aims to enhance its social features to stay competitive against rivals like Apple Music and YouTube Music.
