WhatsApp is making big strides in making it easier for users to connect. The platform is reportedly working on a username search feature, which would allow people to look up others by their chosen username instead of relying solely on phone numbers.
What’s New?
The feature was recently spotted in the Android beta version 2.25.24.22, as reported by reliable WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo. According to the findings, users will soon be able to type a username directly into the Chats tab to discover profiles, connect with existing contacts, or even find groups.
This move could change how people connect on the platform, making WhatsApp more versatile for discovering friends, colleagues, or communities, much like what we see in apps like Telegram.

How It Works
- Users can enter a username using the floating action button within the Chats screen.
- WhatsApp will then scan its database for matches and display relevant results.
- Depending on privacy settings, certain details such as the person’s name and profile picture may be visible.
- Once connected, chats started via username remain end-to-end encrypted, offering the same security as standard number-based messaging.
- Users will be able to share media, make voice and video calls, and revisit these conversations right from their Chats tab.
Privacy & Security Measures
While the username system makes chatting much simpler, WhatsApp has emphasized security:
- Chats will stay private, thanks to end-to-end encryption.
- Users will have the option to enable a username key—an extra passcode-like layer for first-time messages.
- A spam protection mechanism will be implemented to detect unusual behavior and prevent misuse of usernames for spamming or unwanted contact.
Optional and Flexible
Not everyone will need a username. For those who prefer using WhatsApp strictly for family, work, or known contacts, setting a username will remain optional.
When Will It Roll Out?
Currently, the feature is still under development and hasn’t been made available to beta testers. However, given its presence in the Android beta build, a wider rollout could be expected in the near future.
