The iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to come with a battery that boasts improved energy density, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This could translate to longer battery life without necessarily increasing the battery size, or maintaining current battery life with a smaller battery.
Kuo’s insights from the supply chain reveal an increase in the energy density (Wh/kg) of the battery cells in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. To manage potential overheating concerns, Apple might be introducing a first-of- its-kind stainless steel battery case for better heat dissipation.
Earlier rumors hinted at stacked batteries for enhanced capacity and lifespan, but Kuo doesn’t mention this technology in his report. While stainless steel may not be as efficient at heat dispersal compared to aluminum, it offers increased durability and resistance to corrosion. This shift also aligns with upcoming European Union regulations that mandate easier phone battery replacement.
Sunway is said to be a major supplier of these stainless steel battery cases. If Apple adopts this design across all iPhones launching in the latter half of 2025, Kuo predicts a significant 200-250% jump in Sunway’s revenue and profit.
Assuming successful mass production of this new battery design, Kuo expects to see it implemented in all iPhone 17 models next year. The iPhone 16 lineup is anticipated to launch around mid-September, which is roughly four months from now.
