Signal Private Messenger has recently introduced a new feature called “Signal usernames,” which allows users to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. This update is designed to enhance privacy options and provide a new way to communicate while keeping phone numbers private. The feature is currently in beta but will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
Introducing Usernames
Signal usernames allow users to create a unique username, which others can use to reach them on Signal. Unlike other social media usernames, Signal usernames are solely for initiating connections and that are not publicly visible. Users can change their usernames as often as they like or delete them entirely. To connect with someone via their username, one simply needs to open a new chat and type in their username.
Setting Up and Sharing Usernames
To create a username, users can go to Settings > Profile and ensure that it’s unique and includes two or more numbers at the end. They can share their usernames with others, who can use them to initiate a conversation. Signal has not provide a searchable directory of usernames, ensuring privacy. Users can also share a QR code or unique URL that leads directly to their username.
Phone Number Privacy
With the new update, users can now control who can see their phone numbers by adjusting the privacy settings. The phone number will only be visible to those who have it saved in their phone’s contacts. Signal Users can choose option to make their phone numbers visible to “Everyone” or “Nobody.” Additionally, they can also limit who can find them by their phone number in Signal.
