WhatsApp is enhancing group chats with a new “Group Message History” feature, allowing new members to catch up on recent conversations without manual forwarding or screenshots. This update provides instant context while preserving end-to-end encryption and user privacy.

How It Works

Group admins or members can share 25 to 100 recent messages directly with newcomers upon joining. These shared messages appear visually distinct from live chats, complete with timestamps and sender details, and all participants receive a notification when history is sent. Admins maintain control by toggling the feature off for their groups if desired.

Key Benefits

  • Privacy-Focused: Messages stay encrypted; no storage changes on WhatsApp servers.
  • Efficient Onboarding: Ends the hassle of screenshots or repetitive summaries.
  • Admin Oversight: Full flexibility to enable/disable, ensuring group norms are respected.

The feature is rolling out gradually across all WhatsApp devices, starting now. It builds on recent updates like Web client calling, reinforcing WhatsApp’s lead in secure group communication.

This could prove invaluable for community groups, work teams, or family chats where context matters. WhatsApp aims to “set the standard for private, group chat experiences.”
