Satellite Connectivity Support:

Android 15 takes a major leap forward by officially supporting satellite connections. This includes consistent user interfaces across different satellite networks, potentially paving the way for broader global adoption. Apps can now detect satellite connections, allowing developers to optimize user experience for these limited bandwidth situations. Additionally, SMS and preloaded RCS messaging apps can now leverage satellite connectivity, expanding its use beyond emergency situations.

Enhanced Cover Screen Functionality:

App developers can now design their apps to be displayed on the smaller cover screens of foldable devices. While these screens may not be ideal for full-fledged apps, developers have the flexibility to create a more comprehensive user experience.

Screen Recording Detection:

For apps handling sensitive information, Android 15 introduces the ability to detect screen recording. This empowers developers to hide content during screen recordings, adding a layer of security.

Improved Audio and Video Management:

HDR Headroom Control:

Apps can now manage HDR headroom, ensuring a smooth transition between Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content. This prevents overwhelming brightness differences when switching between content types.

Loudness Control:

Consistent audio loudness is achieved through support for the CTA-2075 loudness standard. This eliminates the need for frequent volume adjustments during content playback.

Simplified Audio Sharing:

A dedicated “Audio Sharing” page within Settings simplifies starting and joining Auracast sessions.

Built-in App Archiving:

Managing archived apps becomes more convenient with the integration of app archiving directly into the Settings app. Users can archive and restore apps seamlessly without external tools.

Additional Improvements:

• Enhanced NFC experiences with new APIs allowing devices to passively listen for NFC readers.

• The PDFRenderer API is now a Project Mainline module, receiving updates through Google Play System Updates for improved performance.
• New APIs empower apps to track startup and stop states, display detailed app size information, and more.
• Resolved crashes related to Google Play Store, package manager, Android System Intelligence, and work profile fingerprint usage.

Availability:

The Android 15 Developer Preview 2 is currently limited to developers and available for testing on Pixel devices: Pixel 8/8 Pro, Pixel 7/7 Pro/7a, Pixel 6/6 Pro/6a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.
