Microsoft has announced a new hardware event scheduled for May 20th in Seattle. This event is expected to focus on consumer-oriented devices, following an earlier event on March 21st aimed at commercial users. The May event will likely see the unveiling of new Surface PCs powered by the latest Snapdragon X Elite processors from Qualcomm, making them the first devices announced with this powerful and efficient chip.

Surface PCs Go ARM with Snapdragon X Elite

Leaks have suggested that Samsung is also developing a device using the Snapdragon X Elite, the Galaxy Book4 Edge, but Microsoft may be first to market with their new Surface lineup. These new Surface devices, rumored to be the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, are expected to boast all-day battery life and performance rivaling Apple’s M3 chipsets, thanks to the efficient design of the ARM architecture. Reports suggest these new ARM-powered Surface laptops will be available for purchase in June.

Windows 11 Gets Supercharged with AI

Alongside the new Surface hardware, Microsoft is also expected to unveil a slew of new AI features coming to Windows 11 in the upcoming 24H2 update. These features include AI Super Resolution, which can enhance the quality of images and videos, and on-device Live Captioning for multiple languages, making video calls and media more accessible.

Unlocking New AI Experiences with On-Device NPU

The powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) built into the Snapdragon X Elite chip opens the door for even more innovative AI experiences. One such feature Microsoft is reportedly working on is called “AI Explorer.” This feature would allow users to search for files, apps, browsing history, and more using natural language commands directly within Windows 11. Imagine searching for “that presentation I made last month about sales figures” instead of sifting through folders. This functionality sounds similar to the Timeline feature found in Windows 10, but with the added power of AI.
